Redefining Mobility: How Probe Data is Transforming Transportation Management - INRIX

In August, ten INRIX representatives joined thousands of transportation leaders, innovators, and policymakers at the ITS World Congress in Atlanta — the industry’s premier global event.

With attendees from across the world, the conference was a stage to showcase how new technologies are transforming the way people and goods move through our communities. For INRIX, the theme was clear: probe data is redefining what’s possible in transportation management. From traffic signals and corridors to safety hotspots and curb policies, continuous vehicle data unlocks a level of visibility and scalability that agencies could only dream of a decade ago.

Over the course of five days, our team of experts:

  • Connected with peers and agency partners from around the globe,
  • Shared how INRIX data and solutions are powering real-world results,
  • Demonstrated our latest innovations in signals, safety, curb management, and AI, and
  • Highlighted how agencies can leverage continuous monitoring to move from reactive fixes to proactive management.

A highlight of the week was a presentation by Steve Remias, Head of Product Strategy, on the future of probe-based signal performance measures — showing how continuous monitoring is transforming signal operations at scale.

The Power of Continuous Probe Data

Traditional traffic studies often rely on limited samples, peak-hour counts, or roadside equipment. Probe data turns that model upside down. With billions of waypoints captured from vehicles every day, INRIX provides agencies with a holistic, 24/7 view of travel patterns, congestion, safety risks, and intersection performance.

This shift enables smarter decision-making across the board — whether it’s optimizing traffic signals, identifying speeding hotspots, modernizing curb policies, or evaluating before-and-after impacts of transportation investments.

Real-World Applications Showcased in Atlanta

  1. Signal Performance at Scale: At ITS World Congress, INRIX highlighted probe-based signal performance measures, showing how continuous monitoring allows agencies to move beyond isolated counts to full network visibility. With probe data, engineers can identify problem intersections, validate concerns, and quantify improvements with unprecedented precision.
  2. Spotting Safety Risks: Beyond signals, probe data enables agencies to proactively identify speeding hotspots, better understand risk corridors, and prioritize safety improvements.
  3. Smarter Decision-Making with AI: INRIX Compass, our new AI-powered tool, was also on display. By combining probe data with advanced analytics, Compass helps agencies quickly surface insights, create reports, and make informed decisions at scale.
  4. Managing the Curb Digitally: INRIX also highlighted its work with cities like San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia to modernize curb management. By linking agency asset systems directly into INRIX Road Rules, curb policies stay continuously updated — ensuring accuracy, supporting open standards like the Curb Data Specification (CDS), and helping cities balance safety, accessibility, and mobility needs.

What’s New at INRIX

ITS World Congress was also a chance to highlight what’s next from INRIX:

  • INRIX Compass– Helps agencies quickly surface insights, create reports, and make data-driven decisions at scale.
  • INRIX Signal Analytics API– Bringing the power of probe-based signal performance measures directly into agencies’ own systems and workflows.
  • Trusted Traffic Data – Continuing to provide the reliable traffic data that agencies have counted on for more than 20 years to power planning, operations, and safety initiatives.
  • Curb Management – Expanding our INRIX Road Rules platform to help cities keep digital curb inventories accurate and up to date, integrating directly with agency asset systems and advancing standards like the Curb Data Specification (CDS).

From Snapshots to Continuous Monitoring

Perhaps the most important theme from ITS World Congress was the transition from snapshot-based studies to continuous monitoring. Instead of asking, “What did traffic look like on a single day?” agencies can now track trends, outcomes, and patterns every day of the year — across signals, corridors, curbs, and entire regions. This continuous approach gives transportation leaders the evidence they need to justify funding, prioritize projects, and improve quality of life for their communities.

 Looking Ahead

Our presence at ITS World Congress reinforced our commitment to helping agencies solve mobility challenges with cutting-edge data solutions. Whether it’s reducing congestion, improving safety, modernizing curb operations, or optimizing signal performance, probe data provides the foundation for smarter and more efficient transportation systems worldwide. As we continue to expand and refine these innovations, INRIX is proud to support cities and agencies in building the connected, resilient, and sustainable networks of tomorrow.
