Understanding Freight: Managing Logistics with INRIX Freight Solutions - INRIX

Freight traffic is critical to businesses worldwide. However, managing freight is a challenging task both for logistics companies and transportation agencies.

Traditionally, significant time and effort have been required to analyze trips and control truck traffic. With the substantial strain that freight places on infrastructure, more advanced methods are needed to oversee its movement.

INRIX Freight Solutions

Using INRIX products, cities and businesses can revolutionize how they manage freight. The INRIX Smart Delivery Suite allows operators to understand and analyze fully detailed point-to-point freight movements with categorized data from up to 20% of all freight vehicles on the road. For transportation agencies this capability is supplemented by INRIX Trip Analytics, giving engineers and planners access to millions of trips along with their origin and destination points.

Real-World Applications
Using the INRIX suite of products, multiple transportation agencies have already harnessed modern freight-management capabilities:

  • New Jersey Turnpike/Holland Tunnel: Following reports of freight traffic avoiding congestion on the New Jersey Turnpike into the Holland Tunnel, a study with INRIX data found that 21% of trucks cut through local streets in Jersey City.
  • John F. Kennedy International Airport: Around JFK, a study analyzing freight movements identified precise areas of inquiry and ran scenarios based on potential road closures. Controllable factors such as the time of day and vehicle type provided additional insights.
  • Las Vegas, Nevada: The City of Las Vegas used INRIX products to respond quickly to an emergency closure on I-15 by detecting the alternate routes taken by truck drivers and providing key route information to ensure the smoothest response possible.
  • Maryland Department of Transportation: After the loss of the Key Bridge, MDOT relied on INRIX data to analyze the alternate routes taken by truck drivers. By understanding where the traffic shifted, the city could prioritize measures to reduce congestion on the remaining bridges across the Patapsco River.
  • Portland, Oregon: INRIX products have been pivotal in the City of Portland’s trials of a zero-emission delivery zone as part of broader sustainability initiatives. Portland recently trialed a zero-emission delivery zone limiting access for 5 commercial loading zones to zero-emissions vehicles only. Using INRIX Curb Analytics, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) integrates probe-based data with camera sensors to monitor freight parking distribution and project the effects of proposed changes to regulations or infrastructure.
  • B-Line (cycle logistics company): INRIX integrates information from the company’s cargo trikes and, in return, provides real-time curb usage and roadway condition data. B-Line improves operational efficiency by dynamically routing deliveries and making informed parking decisions to refine last-mile logistics.

Through its vast historical and real-time data, INRIX enables transportation agencies and businesses to proactively manage freight traffic across regions, reduce congestion, and achieve cost savings.  Learn more by watching the Freight Forward: How Cities and States Are Rethinking Freight Management with Transportation Intelligence webinar.
